Dentofacial Orthopedics

Dentofacial orthopedics is a field in orthodontics that involves normalizing the development of a patient’s bone structure to address imbalances in the jaw and face. Treatments in this area of practice involve two phases and typically begin when the patient is 7 to 8 years old. At Virginia Braces and Invisalign Center, our specialized orthodontists also provide dentofacial orthopedics.

Children as the Ideal Candidates

Since dentofacial orthopedics specializes in guiding facial growth and development, children make the ideal candidates. Kids benefit the most from this treatment before their temporary teeth fall out. This is the time when the jaw and mouth are still in the formation phase. The jawbone is more malleable and amenable to treatment. As your child ages, bad bites can become more set, making it difficult to make improvements.

It is essential to institute dentofacial orthopedics before using braces. Else, this form of treatment can also be provided along with orthodontic treatment. If bad bites and other developmental issues are not corrected in time, they may need to be corrected with surgery when your child reaches adulthood.

Is Dentofacial Orthopedics for Your Child?

While jaw and facial misalignments may not be as prominent on the outside during early childhood development as crooked teeth, bad bite can create a wide range of health problems if not treated in time. Children, teens, and adults with bite issues can experience one or more of the following problems:

  • Headaches

  • Pain in the jaw/face

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Sensitivity

  • Tinnitus

  • Worn teeth

  • TMD

Dentofacial Orthopedics for Adults

Dentofacial orthopedics is also used for treating adult patients at Virginia Braces and Invisalign Center. However, treatment of adults may involve surgery. With children, we know that their jaw bones are still in the formation period. This makes it easier for our team to control their jaw growth and tooth movement. However, it is different when it comes to adults. Adults have hardened jaw bones and there is no more bone growth, making it difficult to adjust the bite and adapt the teeth for proper alignment.
